Hallo! Hoe gaat het?..

The Netherlands is a land well known for its location under the sea surface and dams protecting its cities. It is also famous for its culture, unique traditional costume, shoes, tulips (which actually came from Turkey in the mediaeval era), and very liberal society. Its language -Dutch-, which shared common ancestor with German, is also spoken in Belgium, Luxembourg, Suriname, and once Indonesia.

Here I'd like to teach you some Dutch phrases in the formal form. Give them a try with your Dutch friends or if you meet an elder in the post-colonialised Indonesia. =)

PRONUNCIATION GUIDANCE:
Dutch has actually a fair number of difficult consonants and consonant clusters. The same thing happens with some number of its vocal combinations. But below I try giving you the most English-approaching pronunciation.

1. In modern Dutch pronunciation, -n in the end of all words is never pronounced.
2. Dutch ch is pronounced as a very strong guttural sound, like ch in the Scottish loch or kh in Arabic khamar (alcoholic drink).
3. Dutch  U (which means polite "You") is pronounced like the German ü.
4. è  should be read as the  e  in  lever, tender, taken
5. Dashes (-) are given just so as to ease the reading of long words.
